Blog Post 11: Student Art Show

As I was wondering between classes to grab a coffee I couldn't help but notice a wide arrangement of artworks displayed in the Student Union building. Being an admirer of art I thought I could take a look at what GCC's art students were studying for their class finals. As it turns out there was a great variety of different mediums of art, each of which portraying different styles, colors, and techniques. After perusing a majority of the panels that were set up I couldn't help but jot down a few notes for a couple that were quite enticing for me.
One of these works is titled "Magic the Witch Cover" and I believe it was done with watercolor, pen, and brush pen on a 12 inch wide by 8 inch long watercolor sheet. The work depicts a woman with midnight blue hair staring into a handheld mirror while she is wearing a water buffalo's skull, the background is very mystical as it is hued with light violet, dark purple, and a ornate light green pattern in the top left. The water buffalo's eye is ornamented with a lapiz blue colored gem and is surrounded by red flowers. In the top left of the work is a brown flower that is accompanied by another smaller one in the bottom left. From what I can piece together from this work I believe that the artist is attempting to portray the contrast between how magic used to be a commonly accepted method to healing in comparison to today's rejection of those methods. One way this work appealed to me was the use of color and the glitter that the artist utilized on their paper, I like shiny things don't judge me.
The second work that I thought was enticing was titled "Solitude," and it was created using black pen ink such as a Faber Castell pen set. It is also drawn onto a 14 inch wide by 20 inch tall drawing paper with a majority of the drawing being in black and white with the exception of a few sand colored pens to create detail. This work depicts a lone coyote sitting serenely in between two bushes of foliage with a full moon hovering just behind its head. A majority of the drawing utilizes black to accentuate the darkness of night and to outline a majority of the subject portrayed. White pen is utilized to provide shape to certain aspects of the drawing such as the grass, flowers, and the coyote's fur. In order to emphasize these lines the artist applied a sand colored pen along the edges of the leaves in the foliage, the centers of the flowers, and along the coyote's ears. I believe the artist was trying to capture the enchanting mood that the Arizona desert emits throughout the night and early morning. I was enraptured by this photo as it took me back to days when I would stay up all night listening to the cicada's while the light breeze of the Arizona air would waft past me. I enjoyed taking a look at all of the submission's this year for the art showcase and I have come to appreciate the art department more for their commitment to this amazing event.
